Dorothy Mae Bennett was born on July 11, 1943 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to Geneva Breeden Clasp. She was called to her final resting place on November 24, 2020.

She received her high school diploma at East Side High School in 1961. During her high school years, she was very active and participated in several activities. After high school, she moved to Brooklyn, New York and married Charles King.

At an early age she accepted Christ and became a member ofEvans Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Bennettsville, SC where she served faithfully. She held numerous positions while at Evans. She served as church secretary, usher board member, trustee board member, church announcer, and Sunday School teacher, children’s choir director. She also served at the District and Local church level. At that level, she aided as the district’s usher board president, district/local Lay Council, vacation bible school instructor, church class leader, and a Quarterly Conference secretary. She was a member of the Cheraw/Bennettsville choir

She was a member of Golden Star Chapter #371 O. E. S. for fifty years, while serving as the secretary and later served as associate matron. She was also a member of American Legion Hut #213, as well as a member of Miles Tent # 22.

She began her employment with the United States Postal Servicein Brooklyn, NY and later transferred to Hartsville Post Office in Hartsville, SC. After 33 years of working in the postal service, she retired in 1990. After her retirement, she began working for the Marlboro County School system as an assistant teacher for several grade levels. She worked for 12 years in the school system before retiring completely.

Dorothy was an avid reader (gardening magazines were her favorite), loved decorating, fashion, entertaining others, puzzles, coloring, watching tv, and traveling. Her all time favorite passion was working in her yard and gardening, which is why in 2017 she received “Yard of the Month” and was featured in the local newspaper, “The Herald Advocate.”

Those left to grow from her love and cherish her memories are :her mother, Geneva Clasp; her three children: Ivan King of Bennettsville, SC., Tanya Singleton of Atlanta, GA., Roslyn Daly of Charlotte, NC.;  One son preceded her in death, Charles King., one son-in-law, Willie(Big Will) Singleton of Atlanta, GA.; one aunt, Vermell McIver of Brooklyn, NY.; A special cousin: Carolyn Shepard of Brooklyn, NY. ; Two nephews:James Wilson, Dwayne Wilson, both of NY. She leaves to cherish her memories twelve grandchildren: Torian Singleton, Terrell Singleton, Ravyn King, Chrislyn Daly, Ivan King Jr., Michelle Coleman, Jade Hoskins, Teresa King, Daniel Zimmerman, Joshua Moore, Kelvin Grosvenor, Charles King, Jr.; five great grandchildren; and a host of cousins and friends.
