He attended the public schools of New York.
John was preceded in death by his father John Brown; mother Pastor Betty Johnson; sister Debra Henderson all of New York.

Sisters: Susie Vandunk of Laurinburg, NC. Judy Henderson of New York, and, LaKesha Henderson of Lumberton, NC. Brothers: Walter (Cynthia) of Laurinburg, NC, Robert Murray of Laurinburg, NC, and Kedell Thomas of Bennettsville, SC. Grandchildren: Ariana Bethea, Devonta Bethea, Jr., and Gisele Prince all Bennettsville, Rylan Cole of Texas. Mother-in-law Diane Bethea. A host of other relatives and friends.
