Lula Smith Obituary

Sister Lula Mae Smith, daughter of the late Kathleen McLaurin Williams and the late Jesse James Wheeler was born on March 25, 1942 in Marlboro County.  On the morning of August 29, 2020, God sent his angels to MUSC Health Florence Medical Center to escort her to His loving care.   She is now at peace and resting in the arms of the Lord.

Lula “Mae” attended the public schools of Marlboro County (Adamsville Schools).  She completed her post high school education with an Associate degree in Accounting.

Lula Mae resided in Brooklyn, NY and was employed by Sterling Drug Company.  She worked for more than 30 years.  After a brief retirement she went back to work as the Secretary for the Chief Supreme Court Judge in Brooklyn, NY.

Lula accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bennettsville, SC.    She later joined First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, NY.  There she served faithfully as the Financial Secretary for the Women’s Day Committee, member of the Norman Ensemble Choir and Combined Choir, as well as being actively involved with the youth and hospitality ministries.

Finally, Lula Mae retired and moved back home to McColl, SC with her two grandsons, Evander and Xavier.   She joined Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Bennettsville, SC.  She was a faithful member of the Missionary Ministry and Vice – President of the Willing Workers Ministry.   She attended Sunday school and Noon Day Prayer and was always willing to help out with the Kitchen Ministry and the Community Kitchen Ministry.  “Aunt Mae”, as she was affectionately called by GSJ members, loved her church family.

Lula Mae enjoyed her retirement years and spent her leisure time with family and friends. She loved attending church and her Tuesday Bible Class at a church in her neighborhood, sewing, and gardening in her yard.  She took pride in how she decorated her home, both inside and outside.

She was preceded in death by her Mother, Kathleen M. Williams and father, Jesse James Wheeler.

Left to cherish fond memories of her are: three children, Patricia Wilson of Brooklyn, NY; Evander Smith, Jr. of Salem, MA; and Princetta (Horace) Johnson of Brooklyn, NY.  She also raised two of her grandchildren, Evander Smith III, of Fall River, MA; and Xavier Smith, a student at Clemson University, Clemson, SC; two brothers Jerome (Sandra) Wheeler of Trinity, NC; and James Wheeler, Jr. of Bennettsville, SC; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as her beloved fur baby, Precious.
